This is sort of like sacrificing my virginity. A fumbling attempt to enter a realm of greater understanding in the hope that I will be considered a peer of somehow more sophisticated beings.
In other words, I have never had a blog before. Or any web presence really. I’m not sure if it is self-consciousness or simply shame that has held me back before but I really don’t like the idea of people I went to school looking up my details to compare my social status or earning capacity. I don’t like the idea of dubious acquaintances I managed to shed years ago looking at photos of my kids; remote family members or forgotten co-workers laughing at my slack sentence structure, my palpable vanity. Is that what happens on the web? Or am I getting ahead of myself? Well ahead of my potential audience, no doubt.
For all my whining, I am not one to be left out. With the term ‘new media’ being bandied so liberally, I am beginning to feel my age and my ‘old media’ affiliations are starting to falter. So if I can acknowledge my palpable vanity in thinking absolutely anyone is interested in what I have to say then I can commit to the freedom of being unwatched and completely abandon myself in the new media glory that is blogging. Utter self-indulgence. The opportunity to write about anything and everything. Give into a little creative crap shooting in the name of technical initiation. Some blase blablabla.
